Tour

From an enological point of view, Bolgheri is certainly the least ’’Tuscan’’ area of the region, but, in some respects, it is also one of the most interesting. Here we do not find Sangiovese grapes, widespread and true protagonists of classic Tuscan wines such as Chianti and Brunello, but vines of Bordeaux origin (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot) which, thanks to young winemakers with an eye on the future, give birth to wines of excellent quality called Super Tuscans. The Bolgheri wine tour is a unique experience, recommended for wine lovers who want to spend an entire day discovering some of the many prestigious wineries that have made Bolgheri famous all over the world. Our itineraries cover One-day tours from Florence and Livorno (for those arriving on a cruise and wanting a fast immersion in the world of wine and Tuscan hills, while remaining close to the harbor). Hop on our minivan and be accompanied in guided tastings, visits to the vineyards and genuine lunches in typical taverns, whose dishes are contaminated both from the sea and from the inland. You will be captivated by the stories of the inhabitants and you will have the chance to discover some of the most important Etruscan archaeological sites in the world, as well as to take a ride along the typical white roads on E-bikes or on horseback.

Region

We are on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the so-called Etruscan Coast. From San Guido, famous for the Sassicaia estate, an evocative avenue lined with a double row of cypresses rises for 5 km and ends right in front of the characteristic brick castle that marks the entrance to the ancient medieval village of Bolgheri. Cypresses, vines and maritime pines alternate and mix, giving shape to an inimitable natural show, along the routes of the Bolgherese Wine Route.

Wine

As already mentioned, in this area Sangiovese gives way to grapes of Bordeaux-cut vines blended in different percentages and types from cellar to cellar and enhanced by an incredible terroir. This environment give life to the so-called Super Tuscans. Thanks to this successful “experiment”, a symphony created between the terroir and the Bordeaux blended vines, in 1995, the Consortium for the Protection of Bolgheri DOC Wines wrote a new disciplinary with the aim to enhance three types of wines (in order increasing quality): DOC Bolgheri, DOC Bolgheri Superiore and DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia. The disciplinary for the first two Bolgheri DOCs leaves a lot of freedom in the use of international grapes and establishes the use of small French oak barrels, the barriques. The majority of Bolgheri wines are red wines with fairly recognizable organoleptic properties and characterized by intense aromas and soft structure, expressing their best if combined with red meats and game.

SASSICAIA

SASSICAIA

In Bolgheri’s winemaking, innovation has always had the upper hand over tradition. Here, wine has been made since not so long ago, and its production immediately shifted from peasant culture to an international business. Everything begins in the 60s, with the passion for French wines of Marquis Incisa della Rocchetta. The nobleman was assisted by the oenologist Giacomo Tachis, considered the father of modern oenology, and by a a dry and sunny microclimate, in the mission of giving life to the current pearl of Bolgheri: the Sassicaia.

The revolution, and here another exception emerges, didn’t start from the bottom and from the people, but from the entrepreneurial need and will of a single person.
